September 2017 Newsletter: Getting Rid of Unwanted Guests, Detoxification, and September Open House

As we begin the transition from Summer to Fall so follows this month’s newsletter. First is the follow up to last month’s article, What Not to Bring Home from Your Summer Vacation entitled Getting Rid of Unwanted Guests. This article takes a closer look at what may be causing your digestive upset and what to do about it.

The change of seasons is also a great time to change our own internal seasons with a detoxification or purification program featured in the second article.

Detoxification will be further explored at my Open House on September 14 at 7 PM – To Detox or Not, That is the Question.

Due to the overwhelming enthusiasm for the last three events, we have decided to hold this Open House “off campus.” We will be meeting at the American Legion Post 457, 6050 W. The other day I came across an alarming study. It showed that 287 toxins were found in the blood of newborn babies. One of them was a breakdown product of DDT, the pesticide that has been banned for over 40 years! Toxins enter our environment from a variety of sources and unfortunately, they can remain there for decades. Getting Rid of Unwanted “Guests”

In an earlier article, we learned why sometimes our digestion does not seem quite right and how we are exposed to and host all sorts of unwanted “guests” within our own bodies. Lots of times when the doctor cannot determine what is wrong with you or they tell you it is in your head, it may likely be these unwanted “guests” – parasites, yeast/fungi/mold, viruses, or bacteria that are taking over your body and creating a variety of symptoms.

Typical symptoms include: Allergies, anemia, asthma, bloating, chronic fatigue, constipation, Crohn’s disease, diarrhea, enlarged liver or spleen, flu-like symptoms that persist, gas, headaches, immune problems, irritable bowel, unexplained joint and muscle aches, skin problems, sleep disturbances, and teeth grinding can signal parasites, which masquerade so easily as other disorders. Some people will experience secondary gluten and/or lactose intolerance, so add food sensitivities to the list above.

This is all fine and good, but several questions remain. First, how do I know if a “guest” is the underlying cause of the symptoms? Second, what type of “guest” is it? And third, how do I get rid of it? All these are critical questions.

It is important to be aware of other causes of digestive distress which fall into three categories: food allergies/sensitivities, structural issues in the digestive tract, and ongoing emotional stress.

I will use the terms “allergies” and “sensitivities” interchangeably. They are technically not the same, yet they are each specific descriptions of an immune system response. The most common food sensitivities are wheat, gluten, dairy, corn, soy, eggs, nuts, and sugar. Then there are less common ones such as oats, other grains, the nightshade family of vegetables, other fruits, etc. I have seen all kinds of food sensitivities in my clients. And yes, you can be sensitive to a “healthy” food!

There are a variety of testing options to identify food issues: blood tests, saliva tests, and of course muscle testing. Once the underlying cause is identified the solution is simple – avoid the foods that are causing the problem.

Second, there could be structural issues in the digestive tract: insufficient hydrochloric acid, insufficient bile, lack of a gall bladder, acid/alkaline imbalance in the small or large intestines, lack of digestive enzymes. Blood testing, saliva testing, and muscle testing can also be used here to identify the underlying issue. Once the cause is identified there are a variety of nutritional support products such as enzymes, probiotics, acid/alkaline balancers, and digestive tract healers.
Third, there can be excessive emotional stress. Too much stress keeps our body in a sympathetic nervous system response which is a problem as digestion is optimized as a parasympathetic nervous system function.

This can be identified through saliva testing of hormones or muscle testing or simply an awareness of current stressors in one’s life. It can be helpful to learn stress reduction techniques such as breathing and meditation to help alleviate some stress and to break the constant sympathetic nervous system response.

The next question is what type of “guest” are we dealing with. Testing options include muscle testing, stool testing, saliva testing, and blood testing. I have found muscle testing to be most helpful and the most cost effective. I previously used stool and saliva testing more frequently, but find I get similar results from muscle testing, and verification from blood testing.

Stool and saliva testing can identify parasites, yeast, fungus, and bacterial infections, along with inflammatory markers in the small and large intestines, pancreatic enzyme activity levels, and blood in the stool. Blood testing can identify chronic and acute infections from bacteria, parasites, and viruses, and suggest hydrochloric acid levels in the stomach. Often, we are told that our blood tests are “normal.” It is critical to remember that “normal” does not mean “optimal” or “healthy”. When we look at the details of the total white blood cell count and the differential we can observe patterns that suggest chronic and/or acute infection patterns.

Once we know what we are dealing then we use the proper remedies. Each type of issue requires its own protocol. The remedies I use include herbs, homeopathics, and nutritional products that are antimicrobial. Depending on the “guest” there are anti-virals, anti-fungals, anti-yeast, anti-mold, anti-parasites, and anti-bacterial varieties. There are also enzymes, probiotics, and other gut healers to support the digestive tract. To determine the specific protocol for each person I use muscle testing. I have many different products in the office and I use the muscle testing to identify the specific supplement(s) for each individual.

I hope this article has helped you to better understand the process and see that there is definitely a solution to digestive distress. This is one of the most common issues that clients come to the office for and one that is always resolved if the client is compliant with the recommendations. It important to recognize that getting rid of the unwanted “guest” and healing the digestive tract is a process that generally takes at least 3-4 months and for some people up to a year.

August 2017 Newsletter: Tips for a Healthy Summer Vacation

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer. I know for me it is going by way too fast!
Thanks to everyone who attended the Open House a couple of weeks ago. We had a great discussion regarding The Ins and Outs of Digestion! The next Open House will be September 14 at 7:00 PM and the topic will be Fall Cleaning: Do You Really Need to Detox? More details to follow in a few weeks.

In this month’s newsletter, we’ll look at two things you are likely to be exposed to during the summer. One is obvious – the Sun! And the second is not as apparent – critters! These would be parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses found in exotic places of travel as well as your own backyard.

Have Fun in the Sun
There are so many areas where the “natural health” world and the “mainstream health” world seem to clash. It is not only regarding what foods to eat, whether or not to vaccinate, but also what to do about the Sun. The “mainstream” view is to put on lots of sunscreen and you’ll be protected from sunburn and skin cancer. The “natural” view is that all this sunscreen is likely contributing to skin cancer, sun exposure is good for our health, and there are ways to protect ourselves from overdoing it.

The rest of this article will focus specifically on parasites as typically they are not treated correctly by main stream medicine and have lingering and sometimes long-term effects. I worked with one client who had diarrhea for over two years with no support from her regular doctor or the GI doctor. In one week, the diarrhea was gone and in several months the parasite issue was resolved.

What makes parasites so nasty? First, they cause physical trauma to the body, particularly worms. They destroy cells in the body faster than cells can be regenerated. This results in ulceration, perforation, or anemia. Remember, parasites must eat, so they take away our own nutrients – vitamins, minerals, and amino acids – so they can live. Many people will become anemic and fatigued due to this. Not only do they eat, but they poop! They produce toxic waste materials that are harmful to your body. These wastes trigger the immune system leading to increased pain and inflammation.

They irritate bodily tissues, resulting in an inflammatory response from the body. This over time depresses the functionality of the immune system. The actual size and/or weight of the parasitic cysts cause pressure on nerves and organs. They may also cause obstructions, all resulting in malfunctioning of the body’s systems. They can lump together and form a ball, that acts like a tumor. Several years ago, there was a story of a woman from Arizona who they thought had a brain tumor. When they went to remove the “tumor” they found a long worm!

While parasites have always been around, it seems they are even more prevalent today. There are several reasons for this. First there is the international factor. There is an increase in international travel, an increase of refugee and immigrant populations from endemic areas, and an increase in the return of military personnel from overseas. Associated with this is the increasing popularity of exotic regional foods. All these factors bring “new” parasites into our environment. I’ve had clients get parasites in Mexico, Columbia, and Israel.

Within our own daily living there is the contamination of water supplies – both municipal and rural; the increasing use of day care centers – for both children and adults, and the continued popularity of household pets. I’ve had clients get parasites from swimming in rivers and lakes. These are all places where parasites can survive. In addition, the increasing consumption of processed and sugar-laden foods and the use of antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs have suppressed our immune system’s ability to fight off parasites.

For a quick parasite primer, we’ll start with the smallest guys – the protozoa. They account for 70% of all parasites and cannot be seen by the naked eye. They are single celled microscopic organisms that can take over the GI tract and from there migrate to other body organs and tissues. An estimated 7 million people have some form of protozoa living inside of them.

One of them is Entamoeba histolytica which causes a disease called amoebiasis. It mainly infects humans and other primates. It is found in water, damp environments and in soil, so it can contaminate fruits and vegetables. It spreads through fecal contamination. Other than the malarial parasite, it causes more deaths than any other protozoan. It is also very difficult to detect as it makes its way from the digestive tract to the lymph nodes and liver and even cause death. Some strains have become drug resistant and it can produce an autoimmune reaction. Symptoms include abdominal pain, weight loss, weakness, diarrhea, and liver abscesses.

Toxoplasma is another common parasite. This crescent shaped parasite will invade our central nervous system. We can become infected by eating undercooked meat or by handling infected cat litter. The cysts of toxoplasma are passed through cat feces. They become infectious within three to four days, but remain viable for up to 18 months! An acute infection is like mono. Chronic symptoms include hepatitis and lymph problems like Hodgkin’s in the host.

It is estimated that 50% of the US adult population may be carrying a latent toxoplasma infection. Those with a compromised immune system are even more susceptible. Also of greater risk are fetuses as they can suffer serious or fatal effects from infection. Typical symptoms include flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, fatigue, and headache.

Next come the worm family. It should be noted that unless the worm infestation is heavy, most people will not show symptoms of any disease. The smallest of these is the pinworm. It is the most common of all worms in the US and most prevalent in children. Contamination comes from food, water, bedding, house dust, and human contact. While anal itching is the most classic signal, these worms also produce many behavioral and neurological symptoms including hyperactivity and vision problems.

Adult females range from 8 to 13 millimeters in length and have a long, pin-shaped posterior, for which the worm is named. They make their home in the host’s intestines, but unlike many parasites they do not pass into the blood and cannot survive in other parts of the body for any length of time. They lay their eggs outside the body, usually around the anus, causing itching: this assists the larvae’s spread via hand contact.

The most common intestinal parasite in the world is the large roundworm. It is estimated that 1 billion people worldwide are infected. Children are also prone to this infection. It is spread through soil, food, and feces. They are transferred by ingestion. The eggs hatch and quickly penetrate the intestinal wall, where they enter the bloodstream. From there, the roundworm makes its way to the lungs, from where it is coughed up and swallowed, returning it to the gut. Symptoms include fever, tiredness, allergic rash, vomiting, diarrhea, nerve problems, and wheezing / coughing.

Next come the larger worms of the cestoda family. These include the tapeworms found in beef, pork, fish, and dog. Pictured here is the pork tapeworm. These are among the oldest known parasites and the largest. They can grow up to 36 inches! They each have a “head” that attaches to the intestinal wall. As long as the head remains attached, a new worm can grow from it. They are transmitted through infected food. A tapeworm attaches itself to its victim’s intestine with hooks on its “head”, or scolex. They mature over three to four months, during which time the reproductive organs develop and can survive for up to 25 years in humans. Tapeworms lack their own digestive tract so utilize that of the host.

Their eggs are excreted in feces and can survive on vegetation, where they are then consumed by cattle or pigs, and passed on to humans. It can be spread by kissing your dog and eating undercooked meat or fish. While this parasite doesn’t always produce symptoms, allergies, bloating and gas, dizziness, “fuzzy” thinking, hunger pains, mineral imbalance, nausea, vomiting, inflammation of the intestine, diarrhea, weight loss, dizziness, fits, malnutrition, and sensitivity to touch can signal this worm.

Last, but not least is the trematoda family – these are leaf-shaped flatworms, also known as flukes. There are blood flukes, liver flukes, lung flukes, and intestinal flukes. The name corresponds to the organ that they settle in. These originate life in the water.
The blood fluke lives in the bloodstream of infected hosts and cause schistosomiasis, also called bilharzia. They live in water, and penetrate the skin of victims who come into contact with contaminated water plus eating undercooked fish and contaminated produce. The parasite causes inflammation (swelling) and damage to organs, particularly the liver. The adult worms can persist in their human host for decades (up to 30 years), and may not cause any symptoms for years. They leave the host in feces and spend part of their lifecycle in a snail host. Symptoms include: fever, aching, cough, diarrhea, swollen glands, lethargy, depression, edema, enlarged liver, pain on the right side, vertigo, and even cancer.

As you can see there is quite a variety of parasites and they can be responsible for a variety of health issues. I see this all the time in my practice and fortunately have been able to help many clients regain their health.

July 2017 Newsletter: Some of the Latest “Nutrition” Claims in the Press

Summer is here and a Happy Fourth of July to everyone. I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend. This month has flown by as Susana and I have moved into our new residence. Nothing like a move to keep you busy! As such, I don’t have an original article this month, however, I have three interesting articles I want to share.

I’m sure many of you either saw or had a friend or relative question your devotion to coconut oil as a health food as the American Heart Association came out this past month with a hit piece. Or the British Medical Journal saying that unless you are celiac you shouldn’t avoid gluten or you won’t get enough whole grains in your diet. Or what will happen now that California has declared glyphosate is linked to cancer. See below for more details.

Coconut Oil is Healthy
Coconut oil is not healthy and never has been healthy, or so says the USA Today as a mouthpiece for the American Heart Association. Of course we know better, but just for kicks, here’s what they said:

Gluten is Not Healthy
The prestigious British Medical Journal reports that only people with celiac need to worry about consuming gluten. For everyone else, it’s all in our imagination. Plus, if we don’t eat gluten, we won’t get all the whole grains that are supposedly so healthy for us. We know that to our body these whole grains are carbohydrate and that means they are sugar, and too much sugar leads to inflammation and subsequently heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other diseases. However, the authors of the study concluded, “The avoidance of gluten may result in reduced consumption of beneficial whole grains, which may affect cardiovascular risk. The promotion of gluten-free diets among people without celiac disease should not be encouraged.”

Glyphosate (RoundUp) Causes Cancer
This is also from the USA Today, but tells us that California has added glyphosate, the key ingredient in RoundUp to its list of cancer causing agents. But what will they do about it? Not much – perhaps require a label!!

June 2017 Newsletter: Some Thoughts on Graceful Aging, Intermittent Fasting, and MSG

Thanks for all the enthusiasm for last month’s Open House! It was awesome! Once again we managed to get over 30 people accommodated comfortably in the office. And once again special thanks to my wife, Susana, for preparing lots of yummy and healthy food for the event!
We had great discussion about graceful aging and anti-inflammatory diets. The two main takeaways:

1. Graceful aging depends on a multitude of factors chief among them are the health of the endocrine system/hormonal balance and diet. We learned about the main endocrine glands and hormones and natural ways to support them. (See below for more information and links to articles I’ve written on the subject.)

2. There are many different “anti-inflammatory” diets out there. They have certain commonalities as most are gluten and dairy free, limit other grains, sugar, and processed food. Then you get more specifics – Paleo, Westin Price, histamines, FODMAPS, GAPS, SCD, salicylates, phenols, oxalates, glutamates, etc. In some of these diets we see that foods that are generally considered to be healthy (such as fruits and vegetables) contain certain chemicals that disturb select people. This leads to the possible conclusion that it is less about the food and more about the health of the digestive system.

I am pleased to announce the next Open House which will be Thursday, July 20 at 7:00 PM at my office. The featured topic will be Digestion. After May’s Open House I had multiple requests for this subject. While it is important to eat a healthy diet it is also critical to digest it properly!

One of the main points I made about the variety of anti-inflammatory diets is that many people have something disturbing their digestion, which is the reason they are inflamed by so many foods. We’ll explore signs of dysbiosis (poor digestion), how digestion is supposed to work, what can go wrong, and what to do about it! I hope you can join us. Watch for the official announcement and registration in early July.

The office will be closed on Wednesday May 31 and Thursday June 1 in observance of Shavuot. The office will also be closed on Tuesday June 13, Wednesday June 14, and the morning of Thursday June 15 as I will be moving my residence. Please keep those dates in mind.

The Key to Graceful Again – Meet Your Hormones
One of the major determinants of how graceful we age for both women and men is the health of our endocrine system and the hormones it produces. Many experts agree that your body’s most important functional system is the endocrine system. It is composed of glands (the endocrine glands) that produce hormones that control everything happening in the body. So, it’s time to meet your hormones. Or, as one of my favorite clients called them: her “horror-mones!”

Hormones are very powerful biological chemicals produced in very small amounts by the endocrine glands. Hormone levels are precisely and carefully monitored and controlled by the body. They are released into the blood stream and carried to specific cells to initiate specific activities; regulating, controlling, and coordinating all body functions. Many hormones are made at additional tissue sites as well as their “parent” gland. You can think of this as your body’s own inherent back-up system.

What’s the Best Way to Lose Weight?
This is one of the great questions of our times and one I am asked quite frequently. Many of my clients (and myself) will use the “cleanse” (the Standard Process 21-Day Purification Program) or another version of that program. Another technique which seems to get more and more press all the time is intermittent fasting. Dr. Mercola is a big believer. Sometimes I’m skeptical about some of the things he pushes, but in the Spring 2017 Wise Traditions from the Weston Price Foundation there was an article about it.

Natural Solutions for Preventing and Reversing Auto Immune Conditions

The best case is to “manage” it to keep the symptoms as reduced as possible. There is never any mention of a possible reversal of the condition. Fortunately, many natural/holistic practitioners across the country are having success in preventing and reversing autoimmune conditions every day. I recently completed a six week training called the Autoimmune Mastery Program with Dr. Michael Gaeta, one of the country’s leading natural health authorities. This course focused on this very topic – the prevention and reversal of autoimmune conditions.

The purpose of this article is to help you better understand how the immune system works, how autoimmune conditions develop, and how this can be prevented and reversed.

First, let’s take a look at the immune system. It has two main parts. There is the primary or innate immune system and the secondary or acquired immune system. The innate immune system is for immediate response to pathogens. The acquired immune system develops after. It creates highly specific antibodies for foreign (“not self”) or body (“self”) proteins. An allergy is an over-reaction to foreign proteins. An autoimmune condition is an over-reaction to body proteins. The question is of course – what causes the over-reaction?

Next, let’s understand how our cells work. Basically, our cells live and they die. However, there are two ways in which they can die. One way, the natural way, is called apoptosis – this is normal cell death. The cell lives a healthy life, has a natural death, and the body neatly takes care of it. The second way is called necrosis. This is when there is a weakness or degeneration of the cell causing a premature death. Here the clean up method becomes slightly messier which can lead to some problems as we will soon see.

There are two factors that enable an autoimmune condition. The first of these is an immune dysregulation. This occurs when weakened innate immunity allows for pathogens to continuously be active in the body which ultimately leads to an over-active acquired immune system. Causes of immune dysregulation include ongoing infection and infestation, diet, injury, foreign bodies, stress, leaky gut, allergies, chemical sensitivities, genetic factors, vaccinations, cancer and gut dysbiosis.

The second factor is a state of danger. This leads to a high alert status in the body and the launch of an immune attack. The “Danger Theory” implies that auto-immunity occurs when the body is in this state of danger for prolonged periods of time.

Now I would like to pull all the above together. We have what is called the reticuloendothelial system. It works with the lymphatic system to remove dead material from the body. When we experience an overload of necrosis (from immune dysregulation), it is possible for the necrotic tissue cells to overwhelm the reticuloendothelial system (placing the body in a state of danger). As the reticuloendothelial system is overloaded, genetic material from dead cells is now leaking into the blood stream creating autoantigens. This triggers the acquired immune system to create antibodies to destroy the autoantigens. The autoantibodies (these are antibodies to body proteins) will track the source of the autoantigen to the host source and attack those genetic proteins (attacking a specific organ). That in a nutshell is how an autoimmune disease can originate.

What we have subsequently learned is that at some point all disease becomes autoimmune or has an autoimmune component as we will always find autoantibodies to diseased tissue.

There is actually a very simple three step plan for preventing and reversing autoimmune disease, coined PIN by Dr. Gaeta. The “P” stands for “PMG.” This is a group of products manufactured by Standard Process that can be used to assess the situation, reduce the autoantibodies, and prevent disease. The “I” stands for “Immune Regulation.” This is a group of products to support innate immunity, restore the gut, and to clear latent and subclinical infections from the body. The “N” stands for “prevent necrosis.” This is a group of products that support specific organs and their cellular structures as well as detoxify the body.

April 2017 Newsletter: Four Hot Topics of Natural Health

Thanks for all the enthusiasm for last month’s Open House! It was awesome! Somehow we got all 30 people comfortable in the office. Also special thanks to my wife, Susana, for suggesting the idea and then preparing all the yummy and healthy food for the event!

We had great discussion and learning related to four topics:

First, we talked about the importance of the lymphatic system for proper drainage of waste and toxins from the body. While I was tongue-in-cheek with my yoga pants remarks, it is a valid point. Tight yoga pants (as well as other tight clothes) restrict the flow of lymph. Over time this can cause a wide variety of health issues from increased toxicity. We demonstrated some simple muscle testing techniques to see if additional lymph drainage support was required. If you want more information on this check out the March 2017 newsletter.

Second, we learned about auto-immune disease. We learned what causes it and what can be done from a natural perspective to prevent and reverse these diseases. Look for a feature article on this topic in next month’s newsletter. Third, we talked about the importance of the brain and the nervous system to overall health. Without proper balance in these systems it is difficult for complete healing to occur. What you will read below is how the nutrients depleted by hormone based birth control pills play a major role in overall health and may be directly responsible for some of the issues experienced by the women using them including: depression, low energy, and thyroid issues.

Birth control is big business! It is marketed for a variety of purposes to women aged 10-60! They are claimed to make periods “regular”, “lighter”, or “less painful”; to relieve menstrual headaches; to control endometriosis; to clear acne; to help with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome; to help with peri-menopausal changes; and “may lower” ovarian and endometrial cancer risk. Whether or not they live up to these claims is highly debatable.

These oral contraceptives are marketed as “hormones”, but they are not natural – they are synthetic estrogens and progesterone. As such, they do not act the same of natural hormones. In fact they are suppressing the normal cycle, not “regulating” it. They create a false period. One of the ways the female body clears toxins is through the monthly shedding of the uterine lining. This “false period” creates the condition where there is less cleansing of toxins.

Nutrient Deficiencies Caused by Hormone-based Birth Control

Note: This article is not intended as a debate about birth control. It is intended to offer education regarding nutritional deficiencies that are known to be caused by the use of hormone based birth control. Most medications have known associated nutrient depletions. There are multiple books available on this subject. While the books are helpful in listing the depletions, they do not discuss the ramifications of these deficiencies. The purpose of this article is to take that next step and help individuals make better informed decisions. If you use or intend to use this form of birth control, you may want to consider nutritional supplementation.

There are numerous known side effects including headaches, vomiting, unclear speech, dizziness, weakness or numbness in arms or legs, chest pain, coughing blood, shortness of breath, rash, heavy bleeding, blood clots, stroke, leg pain, altered vision, stomach pain, loss of appetite, tired, weak, fever, swelling, and depression. In fact, many women quickly discontinue usage due to these side effects.

It is likely that many of these side effects are associated with the nutrient depletions. Following is a very brief description of the key impacts of some of these nutrients:

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) and Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine): These have many functions, but a major one is the tryptophan pathway. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a precursor to melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is a key anti-oxidant and important for sleep; serotonin is important for mood. Depression is associated with lack of serotonin.

Vitamin B2 is also an integral part of enzymes involved in oxidation reduction reactions that drive cell respiration. What does that mean? It is critical in our cell making energy for our body. It also supports the function of antioxidant enzymes and interacts with the other B vitamins. It promotes a healthy immune system and regulates the activity of 50 of our enzymes.

Vitamin B6 plays an important role in our metabolic reactions, specifically amino acid metabolism (making proteins for your body to use in building itself) and glycogen utilization (blood sugar control). B6 also acts as a co-enzyme for 100 other enzymes that play key roles in many biological processes. It is also involved in supporting the production of hormones and neurotransmitters – the chemicals that are directing all your body’s activities.

Vitamin B9 (Folate): Folate is key to the process of methylation which covers just about everything our body does – from clearing of toxins to energy production to neurotransmitter regulation to DNA replication. Folate is critical to the metabolism of nucleic acids and amino acids. Because of this, it supports overall growth and development and blood cell formation and supports normal growth of the fetus.

Vitamin B12: Shortages of B12 can cause anemia. B12 is a cofactor for two, yet very important enzymes. One is used for methionine metabolism. Methionine is an essential amino acid. The other enzyme aids in producing energy from proteins and fats. Overall B12 supports the nervous system, promotes the maturation of red blood cells (hence the tie to anemia when deficient in B12) and other cells, and supports bone and joint health.

Vitamin C: Many functions, chief among them immune system support. Vitamin C is also involved in forming collagen which is in our connective tissue. It also facilitates iron absorption and assists in cholesterol metabolism. So it is helping the blood, cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems.

Zinc: Many functions, main co-factor in many biological processes plus immune system support. Zinc supports the formation of many enzymes and insulin. The same insulin we need for blood sugar control. It also assists with wound healing, reproductive organ growth and development, and metabolism of phosphorus, carbohydrates, and proteins. Putting it simply – zinc helps many body processes work.

Magnesium: Many functions and most people are deficient even without being on hormonal birth control. Magnesium aids in enzyme activation; helps metabolize blood sugar; supports healthy nerve and muscle function; assists in forming bones and teeth; and plays a role in nucleic acid, protein, carbohydrate, and fat synthesis.

Tyrosine: A building block of thyroid hormone. Shortage of tyrosine can then lead to low thyroid symptoms.

Selenium: Many functions, among them converting thyroid hormones from storage form (T4) to available form (T3) and for breast health. Selenium supports a healthy immune system response, prostaglandin production (hormone precursors), and healthy reproductive, pancreatic, and thyroid functions.

CoQ10: A key nutrient for energy production in the mitochondria.

It is evident that the nutrients depleted by hormone based birth control pills play a major role in overall health. When we look at three main health concerns of women today (depression, low energy, and thyroid issues) there is a very strong association between these symptoms and the nutrient being depleted by birth control pills.
