Newsletter May 2019: The Devil is in the Details

The inspiration for this month’s newsletter comes from two client experiences this past month which illustrate the importance of details when we face health challenges.

The first example is a client with a sensitivity to corn. I have had several clients with corn sensitivities in the past and with each one I learn more about the subtleties of this condition. It is very difficult to completely prevent corn from entering your body because it is hidden in different forms and derivatives in many foods, drinks, and consumer products. Note the terminology “entering your body” as opposed to “removing corn from your diet” because of its inclusion in consumer products such as toothpaste or deodorant.  In most cases it can be identified on product labels, but in other instances (such as alcoholic beverages) it is not required to be on the label due to various labeling laws.

The second example is a client with sensitivity to EMFs. I have devoted several recent articles and newsletters to the dangers of EMFs and the latest technology of 5G. This client’s experience indicates the impact EMF exposure can have when one is already health challenged.

I hope you find these two articles interesting and informative.

Corn: The Less Well Known Just as Serious Food Sensitivity

When you hear that someone has a food allergy or sensitivity what comes first to your mind? If you are like most people it is gluten, wheat, or perhaps dairy. Yet to many people, corn is equally problematic for two reasons – first, it is less known so not considered, and second, it generally acts more subtly.

I have several clients with corn sensitivities, and it is always a similar story – strange symptoms which no one can figure out, which go away when corn is completely removed from the diet. However, completely removing corn is a major challenge. My client correctly states that “corn is in everything.” Not only food and drinks, but consumer items such as toothpaste and deodorant.

I have a list that I provide for my clients of products that contain corn. Including: corn starch, corn syrup, corn meal, glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, maltose, dextrins, cyclodextrins, maltodextrin, emulsifiers, lecithin, citric acid, lactic acid, sorbitol, mannitol, xantham gum, modified and unmodified starches, MSG, ethanol, and organic acids used in plastic.

Recently I have learned some more places where corn is hidden thanks to this recent correspondence from a client with a corn sensitivity:

“I just had a full circle/ ah HA moment and wanted to share with you… with the help of your guidance and knowledge (and internet) I came to realize Tito’s vodka, is 100% made of corn. I had 2 drinks this past weekend with Tito’s vodka, and have had some face issues. Nothing major just wasn’t as good as it was.”

Are EMFs Overloading Your System?

With the introduction of the new 5G technology, the safety of EMFs particularly as related to wireless and cell phone technology, is once again making headline news across the natural health media and even the main stream media. The wireless industry is encountering stiff resistance from local groups requesting that their local governments do not allow 5G installation until there are studies supporting safety. We are seeing many smaller towns and cities across the US, Europe, and throughout the world where these protests are taking place. Some municipalities are removing the WIFI from their schools. Earlier this month, the city of Brussels became the first major city to put a halt to the deployment of 5G.

For more information on this click here: http://www.brusselstimes.com/belgium/12907/brussels-standards-must-be-adapted-to-enable-5g-deployment or here: https://www.worldhealth.net/news/brussels-first-major-city-halt-5g-due-health-effects/.

I would like to share a real-life client experience that occurred this past month. A client came in for a follow up appointment a couple of weeks ago. She reported that since her last appointment she noticed that she was not feeling well and had trouble sleeping. Like other clients, she concluded that it must be the new supplement causing the problem.

Under these circumstances during the muscle testing process I make sure to check if something new is present. And sure enough it was! For the first time ever with this client her body was suggesting EMF interference. Since it had never come up before I was a little surprised. So, I hesitatingly asked, “Has your exposure to EMFs increased recently?”

Her response, “Funny you should mention that. We recently put a new smart TV in the bedroom.” I asked, “When was that?”. The reply, “Right after my last appointment.” “Well, that is likely your problem,” I responded.

Newsletter April 2019: The Wonderful Weston A. Price Foundation

I have decided to devote this newsletter to the wonderful work of the Weston A. Price Foundation. I am one of the Co-Directors (with Susan Wichman and Laurie Meyer) of the Ozaukee/Washington County Chapter. The Foundation provides a plethora of helpful information on current topics affecting our health.   While the original work of Dr. Price focused mainly on food, the Foundation has expanded its areas of interest to include environmental issues, pesticides, vaccinations, and other controversial topics.

As we know good health starts at the farm or ranch with healthy soil and healthy animals. The Weston A. Price Foundation helps citizens find food from chemical-free and pasture-based farms through its local chapter system.

The Foundation provides support to farmers who raise produce and pasture-fed meat, eggs, and dairy products.

All the information that the foundation provides is evidence-based.

For a quick review of the work of Dr. Weston A. Price click here: https://brwellness.com/?p=1289

Click here for the Weston A. Price Foundation website: https://www.westonaprice.org/

I strongly urge you to become a member of the Foundation. For just $40 per year you receive a quarterly journal Wise Traditions with all their latest articles of interest. All the Journals are available online, but donations are still helpful and appreciated! Here’s a link to the Journals: https://www.westonaprice.org/category/journal/

Below are a few of the highlights from the most recent Wise Traditions, Winter 2018. I trust you will find them entertaining and enlightening!

The Crowd’s Dietary Wisdom

This may be my favorite article from this issue. The author, Tom Naughton, explains why we should listen to crowds, not experts! You will see how the “experts” believe they now best what is good for you and how they manipulate the uninformed to follow their point of view.

Several years ago, he directed the documentary Fat Head which I definitely encourage you to watch.

Sunscreens: The Dark Side of Avoiding the Sun

This is another excellent article, especially as the weather (finally) turns warm. In this article Elizabeth Plourde enlightens us on the chemicals and nanoparticles in sunscreens. The widespread use of sunscreens has resulted not only in increased skin cancers but in contamination of the world’s water sources.

When Susana and I were in Australia at the Great Barrier Reef it was mandatory to wear a full wet suit when going in the water. The reason stated was to protect the reef from all the sunscreen. The chemicals are killing the ocean life. Makes you wonder what they might be doing to us!

Vaccinations

This is probably the one of the most divisive health issues confronting society today.  Whatever your view may be, I would recommend you to take a look at the Foundation’s new flyer devoted to this topic. It is a fact-based approach to the discussion looking at Myths and Facts about vaccinations, how to best build immunity, best practices if forced to vaccinate, and known harmful ingredients that are in vaccinations. March 2019 Newsletter: March Madness – What’s the Right Diet for Me?

While filling out your NCAA Tournament Bracket can be challenging, nothing can be more maddening than trying to figure out your optimal diet. There are so many options and opinions, all claiming to be the best! The truth is that we are all different – different genes, different histories, different life circumstances, different metabolisms – and all these factors affect our health and what is the best diet for you. As a base line it is important to eat clean and healthy food, but after that the mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats is not going to be the same for everyone.

One of the latest trending diets is the Keto Diet. At first all we heard was the successes, but now more and more nutritionists are writing about how it is not the perfect diet for everyone. In this month’s feature article, I offer my thoughts on the subject. See below for “To Keto or Not…That is the Question.”

Susana and I are just back from our trip to Australia. It was one of the most beautiful places we have visited. Charming cities, breath-taking landscapes, and wonderful people. If it is not on your bucket list you may want to reconsider!

Exciting news: I am making this one-time special offer for new clients to save $100 on their initial consult if they are referred by existing clients or readers of this newsletter! This offer is good for the month of March only. This is a great time for you to remind your loved ones, friends, and colleagues that you have encouraged to make an appointment, that NOW is the time!

To Keto or Not…That is The Question

It seems everybody is talking about the Keto Diet. You may have tried it yourself, or you may know someone who has tried it. It may have worked great or not. Any outcome is possible, as with all diets it is critical to remember we all have different body chemistries and what works for one could be difficult for someone else.

In this article we will look at the history of the Keto Diet, the positives, the negatives, and why it may or may not work for you. For the rest of the article click here: https://brwellness.com/?p=1282

Success Story – GI Upsets No More

“I have been suffering with GI upset for years and could never figure out what the problem was. I tried giving up certain foods that I thought were the source of the problem however I continued to run to the bathroom after almost every meal. I had seen a few doctors and they just kept telling me it was IBS and sent me on my way but I was still suffering and wanted an answer. I was referred to Bernie by a friend and boy am I glad I saw him! He figured out that I had a mold that was causing the upset as well as a few foods that I was sensitive to that I ate pretty frequently. After only a few short months of taking supplements and avoiding dairy and cashews I actually forgot that I used to have any digestion problems in the first place! Even my friends and family have noticed the difference! I am now eating the right foods for my body, taking supplements to get rid of the mold, and I am no longer going to the bathroom 5-6 times a day!”  K.T.

February 2019 Newsletter: Two of the Biggest Threats to Your Health

Winter is here! Today has been a snow day here in Milwaukee. I have been working from home, catching up on e-mails, talking to out-of-state clients, and rescheduling all my in-town clients. We’ve had about 7-10 inches of snow and more seems to be coming. The below zero weather comes later in the week. Needless to say, Susana and I are looking forward to our two-week trip to Australia coming up!

Per my earlier e-mail – the office will be closed beginning February 2 and I will be back the afternoon of February 19. I’m sending out this newsletter a few days early so that if you need supplies you will still have time to get them before I go. Please let me know as soon as possible so we can schedule a pick up.

This newsletter will be brief and will focus on what I believe are two of the major threats to our collective health: the coming rollout of 5G technology and glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp).

Dangerous Substance #1: 5G

The new cell phone technology called 5G is beginning to be rolled out nationwide. The good news is it will be very fast and enable all kinds of new and amazing technology breakthroughs. The bad news is it may threaten your health. From what I have been hearing I have many concerns about the potential negative health effects from its deployment.

Here are some articles for you:

20000 Satellites 5G To Be Launched http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/20000-satellites-5g-be-launched-sending-focused-beams-intense-microwave-radiation?

Citizens Concerned About 5G http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/citizens-arms-against-5g-wireless-technology-roll-out-are-their-concerns-justifie?

While 5G is the latest technology, there are also concerns about EMFs which I have shared in the past. Here’s a great video from Nick Penault he calls EMF 101: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEHx6d7jpHQ

Dangerous Substance #2: Glyphosate

Glyphosate. Ever heard of it? Probably not. So, let me introduce it to you – it is the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup®. The more I learn about it, the more I am concerned. The more I learn about it, the more I am convinced that it may be the number one enemy of good health and the main pathway to so many of the modern diseases we now experience. And if nothing else, it is a great reason to eat organic.

Client Success Story: Natural Supplements to Reduce Period Symptoms

“Thanks to Bernie and his supplement help, my period and period symptoms have become extremely tolerable.  I went from taking 5+ Advil each day due to awful period cramps and body fatigue. After seeing Bernie for about 1 month, I have decreased my Advil intake during my period to only 2 throughout my whole cycle.  I have never been on birth control before because I hated the thought of it and what it could do to my body.  This process has been better than even the thought of birth control to control my period and every changing hormones.” C.S

January 2019 Newsletter: Happy New Year – Let’s Make 2019 Your Healthiest Year Ever!

Happy New Year – Let’s Make 2019 Your Healthiest Year Ever!

With the New Year our thoughts turn to our annual New Year’s resolutions. This year let us all resolve that 2019 will be our healthiest year ever! We will do what we need to do – eat healthier, exercise more, and engage in activities that reduce our mental and emotional stress.

This may seem like a lot to do. My advice is to do what you can. Create success that builds on success. The path to be your healthiest self involves multiple steps. Take them one at a time and keep moving forward!  One of the best ways to be successful is to have a partner or partners walking the path with you. Share your successes; motivate and support each other when you struggle.

An even more significant resolution may be to help someone else become healthier in 2019. Many of you mention a friend or loved one that you would like to come see me. Now is the perfect time to encourage them to set up an appointment. Let us make 2019 the healthiest year ever for everyone we know!

This newsletter has the final installment of the articles overviewing the macronutrients. See below for Fabulous Fats!

Did you overdo it during the Holiday Season? Looking for a cleanse or detoxification program? If so, see the article below on what type of program is best for you.

Fabulous Fats!

In this final installment of articles overviewing the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate, and fat) we complete the picture with fat. Everybody knows that fat is bad for you.  Right? Well, not exactly.  It is fat that has been most unjustly demonized.  We have been suffering from a low-fat craze for the last thirty years.  Everybody (well not really everyone!) has been convinced that fat is bad for us and should be avoided at all costs.  So, what has happened?  We got fatter!  Obesity rates are going through the roof.

What’s Right for You?

This is the time of the year when we re-focus on our health. There are a couple of reasons for that. First, it is a New Year, so it is time to make changes – eat better, exercise more, and lose weight. Second, many of us recognize the Holiday Season took its toll. We notice a few extra pounds, an overall sensation of not feeling our best, and it seems we’re either getting sick or fighting off a cold or flu. Then the natural human desire to feel better takes hold.

We look for a solution, something to make us feel better. This is typically some type of “diet” or “weight loss program” or “cleanse.” There are many programs to choose from, but the important question is what is best for you. In determining that you need to understand the different types of programs available.

I classify programs into three main categories: purification or detoxification programs, gut purification programs, and weight loss programs.

December 2018 Newsletter: Happy Holidays and Pearls of Wisdom from Ann Louise Gittleman

Happy Holidays!! My best wishes to you and your family for a Happy and Healthy holiday season. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!

I recognize this is a busy time of year so I’m keeping this month’s newsletter short and sweet.

During my November Open House we were joined by Ann Louise Gittleman who discussed the “radical” in her new book Radical Metabolism and we were treated to a spontaneous half hour question and answer session with her. She shared several pearls of wisdom which are highlighted below.

Let us continue to look at the key macronutrients. This month we look at carbohydrates. The amount of carbohydrates to have in our diet is probably the most controversial question of nutrition.  You will see heated debates illustrating the benefits of both low carbohydrate diets and high carbohydrate diets.  See below and form your own opinion!

And last but not least is a link to my website to learn more about the dangers of EMFs.

Enjoy!

Pearls of Wisdom from Ann Louise Gittleman

At my Open House a couple of weeks ago we discussed Ann Louise Gittleman’s latest masterpiece Radical Metabolism. We were blessed to have Ann Louise join us live via Skype. She reviewed the key concepts which make her new approach to healthy eating “radical” and then we were treated to a thirty-minute Q & A session. Ann Louise offered a few pearls of wisdom which I will share below.

To learn what makes Radical Metabolism so radical and to enjoy these five pearls of wisdom (Pearl #1 – Iron and Ferritin, Pearl #2 – The Importance of Cookware, Pearl #3 – Tea and Coffee, Pearl #4 – Bitters, and Pearl #5 – Grapefruit) click here: https://brwellness.com/?p=1247

Cut the Carbs

In this third installment of articles overviewing the macronutrients ((protein, carbohydrate, and fat) we turn our attention to carbohydrates. The amount of carbohydrates to have in our diet is probably the most controversial question of nutrition.  You will see heated debates illustrating the benefits of both low carbohydrate diets and high carbohydrate diets.  The Standard American Diet (SAD) has become a high carbohydrate diet.

The Latest on EMFs

We hear a lot these days on the dangers of EMFs. I urge you to learn more information from this recent article on my website. https://brwellness.com/?p=1242

What’s in Your Gut?

Capital One used to run commercials asking, “What’s in your wallet?” Many of us question what is in our gut. Now you can a specific answer, as several clients are now doing with the GI-MAP test. The GI-MAP is offered by Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. This stool test utilizes cutting edge, Quantitative PCR technology to provide a true DNA/PCR based stool test. This technology has high sensitivity, specificity and a rapid turnaround. The GI pathogens include bacteria, parasites and viruses. Continuing with this platform, the GI-MAP measures opportunistic organisms, normal flora, fungi, parasites and antibiotic resistance genes. It also includes immunologic markers for GI health and function including SIgA, Elastase, Calprotectin and Anti-gliadin testing.

To learn more about the GI-MAP and Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory click here: https://www.diagnosticsolutionslab.com/

This test can be life changing! Here’s what one of my clients had to say:

“For months I was having some serious GI problems that my Gastroenterologist could not diagnose.  Decided to seek out consultation with Bernie at the suggestion of a friend.  Bernie suggested [the GI-MAP] test and it was discovered that I had an intestinal parasite along with some other things that were causing GI issues and bloating.  Bernie suggested some supplements and diet changes and I am happy to say that after 4 short months my GI issues have completely cleared up, I’ve lost 12 pounds, and have gained an abundance of energy!  I feel better than ever and attribute it to Bernie’s thoughtful and careful suggestions and support.  I highly recommend his services!” B.P.

The Power of Protein

While trendy diets come and go, what does not change is how the human body functions and the nutrients required for optimal health. There are disagreements and various interpretations of how much of each nutrient one should consume. Search the internet and you can find a study to support most any opinion. Ultimately this has led to mass confusion. As one of my clients recently said to me, “It’s kind of interesting when you think about it – how we are the only animals that do not know what to eat!”

In the spirit of helping you to understand what to eat and why, here is the second installment of four articles. Last month I provided an overview of each macronutrient (protein, carbohydrate, and fat). This month we begin a deeper exploration, beginning with The Power of Protein.

Protein provides the structural basis for our body: building and repairing our muscles, ligaments, tendons, nails, hair, organs, glands, blood, hormones, neurotransmitters, cell receptor sites, antibodies, and enzymes.  As you read and learn about what protein does in your body, please consider this question – are you eating enough protein?

To learn more about the benefits of protein, where protein comes from, the healthiest forms of protein to eat, and how much protein you should consume click here: https://brwellness.com/?p=1215.

Breast Cancer Awareness vs. Prevention

Thanks to Vanessa Teff for allowing me to post her October newsletter.  Vanessa can be reached at: Optimum Vitality, 6654 University Ave, Middleton, WI 53562. Phone number: (608) 828-6312.  Website: https://www.optimumfunction.com/

October is breast cancer awareness month. I’m sure you’ve heard that statement before. The car dealerships are showing support with pink lights. The football players are wearing pink shoes. The cashiers are asking for a small donation to be sent to charity. Pink everything is being sold. Does bringing awareness to an issue help? It certainly does spread the word. However, awareness is not the same as prevention.

The tricky part about breast cancer is that 70 – 80% of diagnoses are not genetic. If that doesn’t catch you by surprise, read that statement again. Those of us without the gene are nearly just as likely and possibly, more likely to be at risk. Statistics tell us that 1 out of 3 women will get cancer. What a sobering statistic.

To read the rest of the article click here: https://brwellness.com/?p=1230.

Vanessa also discusses the relationship between EMFs and soft tissue cancers. To learn more about the dangers of EMFs click here: http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/can-you-really-be-allergic-wifi-and-cell-phones.

Client Success Stories

“I reached out to Bernie after hearing positive outcomes for two colleagues who see him.  I trust their perspectives, had some idea of what his recommendations would involve, and was ready to take on my declining health and wellness!  I was feeling overweight, tired, and simply unwell.

At my first appointment, Bernie identified two food categories to avoid, and I immediately started planning my food menus to reflect his suggestions.  Within just a couple of days, I felt like a different person.  My sleep has been improved, and my energy doesn’t lag during the day as it has for so long.  My digestion is improving, and I haven’t felt hungry or deprived, which has often been the case when trying to make healthier changes in the past.

I look forward to continued improvements in my overall health and wellness and appreciate Bernie’s patience and availability for follow-up questions!” K.L.

“Thanks again for all your help in balancing my gut issues. The dark circles and bags under my eyes have been greatly reduced. My skin rashes have all cleared up.  My digestion is working perfectly!! My thinking is more clear.  I have been able to stop using the prescription Metrogel 1% for rosacea….It’s amazing how your gut affects every part of your body!!!  Your supplements are fantastic!!!” C.W.

October 2018 Newsletter: Let’s Get Radical! (Metabolism, that is)

Several weeks ago, I wrote a special email devoted to Ann Louise Gittleman’s latest book, Radical Metabolism: A Powerful New Plan to Blast Fat and Reignite Your Energy in Just 21 Days. While the focus of the book is weight loss it is much more than that. It provides a guide for long term health and vitality from a complete reboot of your metabolism. Many of my clients have already purchased the book, some have started the process, and others (including myself) plan to follow the program in the next couple of weeks. In next month’s newsletter I will share our experiences.

With football season back in full force concussions are again in the news. Did you know that there are nutritional protocols to support the brain in healing? My colleague Vanessa Teff wrote an excellent summary of information we learned earlier in the year at Physica Energetics Concordia training. With her permission I am including that information (with a few of my own edits) below.

In the spirit of helping you to understand what to eat and why I am offering a series of four new and updated articles. It begins with a quick overview of the three critical macronutrients – protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Subsequent articles will look in more depth at each macronutrient.  See below for the first installment.

Radical Metabolism: If You’re Going to Read One Nutrition Book – Read This

She’s done it again! Ann Louise Gittleman’s latest book, Radical Metabolism: A Powerful New Plan to Blast Fat and Reignite Your Energy in Just 21 Days is a game changer. RADICAL METABOLISM

It is the type of book that you do not want to put down! Jacob Teitelbaum, MD’s endorsement sums it all up, “A powerful ‘Force of Nature’ in the healing community. Ann Louise is used to being on the cutting edge. Want to see what the experts will be saying in twenty-five years? Simply see what she is saying NOW!”

If you have struggled with Keto and Paleo diets, or you have an autoimmune or thyroid problem, then THIS book is for you.

This groundbreaking program goes way beyond belly fat—it lays the foundation for a total health reboot. Ann Louise takes on the real factors driving autoimmunity, weight loss resistance, and mitochondrial dysfunction. She reveals the “new thyroid cure” – hidden connections between thyroid, gallbladder, and bile flow. No gallbladder? No problem, this book solves that too!

Radical Metabolism provides cutting edge information about why traditional detoxification and weight loss efforts often fail long-term—including Keto and Paleo.

If you feel like you have been in an endless, metabolism-crashing dieting loop, then you owe it to yourself to check out Ann Louise’s new book here. RADICAL METABOLISM

If you need any additional encouragement, if you order the book now you get over $107 of free gifts! RADICAL METABOLISM

Nutrition to Heal The Brain

Why are concussions hard to truly diagnose? Part of the reason is because cell death does not occur for 9-12 hours, so it is hard to recognize. Sometimes certain cell death does not occur for 7 days. Therefore, symptoms after a fall, hit or accident may occur several days after the event.

After each concussion, the cortex (outer most layer of the brain) thins. Believe it or not, each brain injury also creates changes in the gut. Any neuroinflammatory issue, especially those not caused by concussions and head trauma, become a gut issue. Outside the brain and spinal cord, there are more neurons in the gut than anywhere else in the body.

BDNF
Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a protein in the brain. It supports survival of existing neurons and encourages the growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses. In the brain, BDNF is active in the hippocampus, cortex, and basal forebrain—areas vital to learning, memory, and higher thinking. Increasing BDNF drastically speeds up our rate of healing.

The best way to increase BDNF is through exercise. Be mindful, the days directly following a head trauma or accident are not the most beneficial times to move. Take it slow, use remedies first and let the body begin to recover. Because of the increase in BDNF with exercise, working rigorously before studying will help your brain absorb more information.

BDNF does not just help with inflammation associated to concussions but rather any nerve related disease, including Alzheimer’s. In a recent study on Alzheimer’s and BDNF, the only group that didn’t improve in memory and cognition were those who did not move. Get out and move!

There are a variety of herbs and nutrients that help reduce neuroinflammation. These include:

Glutathione: This is the most powerful antioxidant our body already makes. However, with exposure to environmental toxins and stress, we do not produce as much as we could. Applied directly to the skull after injury (within the first hour) will reduce the amount of cell death by 67%. Wow!!! Those of you with kids in sports, keep some on hand. When applied between 1 and 3 hours, it will reduce cell death by 30%. Know that it can still be applied topically years later.  Glutathione from Physica Energetics and Designs for Health are 3-5 times more bioavailable because they are a liposome.

Ginkgo Intrinsic (a Physica Energetics remedy) contains Ginkgo, Ashwaganda, Gotu Kola, St. John’s Wort & Skullcap. Ginkgo is a neuroadaptogenic herb which means that it helps the nerves adapt to stress. Ashwaganda is the vital life force herb that also nourishes the adrenals. Gotu Kola improves microcirculation, St. John’s Wort increases BDNF and Skullcap is calming – it brings the energy back into the nervous system. I also have found these herbs can be used separately and prefer the MediHerb products in those cases.

Omega-3’s are first line therapy for any inflammation, anywhere in the body. In our diets, we typically do not get enough Omega-3’s nor enough healthy omega-6’s. (Note this is also a key aspect of Ann Louise’s Radical Metabolism.) Fish, walnuts, chia, avocado, hemp seeds, flax seeds, borage and black currant oil are beneficial sources of both.

Lymph support is needed to drain the GLYMP (lymph in the brain), especially after an injury. Without such, nutrients cannot get to the tissue.

Echinacea is not just an immune herb. Echinacea is a mood-altering plant that effects the brain through the cannabinoid receptors (those of you taking CBD oil may be able to relate to this).

The ABCs of Nutrition

While trendy diets come and go, what does not change is how the human body functions and the nutrients required for optimal health. There are disagreements and various interpretations of how much of each nutrient one should consume. Search the internet and you can find a study to support most any opinion. Ultimately this has led to mass confusion. As one of my clients recently said to me, “It’s kind of interesting when you think about it – how we are the only animals that do not know what to eat!”

In the spirit of helping you to understand what to eat and why I am offering this series of four articles. It begins with a quick overview of the three critical macronutrients – protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Subsequent articles will look in more depth at each macronutrient.

Magnesium and Calcium: Are You Deficient?

We hear a lot about the importance of calcium and magnesium to our health. I’ve attended several seminars recently where this was emphasized. One presenter said he checks for calcium, magnesium, and other minerals on all his clients. Why are minerals so important to us?  They assist the body in energy production – minerals contain no calories or energy.  They work with vitamins and enzymes to fuel all our metabolic processes.  Our health cannot be optimized if these processes are impaired.

Another presenter stated that 74% of the US population is deficient in magnesium. In preparing for this article, a quick Google search reveals another website saying 80%. Quick searches state similar high numbers for calcium deficiency.

Success Stories

“Thanks again for all your help in balancing my gut issues. The dark circles and bags under my eyes have been greatly reduced. My skin rashes have all cleared up.  My digestion is working perfectly!! My thinking is more clear.  I have been able to stop using the prescription Metrogel 1% for rosacea…It’s amazing how your gut affects every part of your body!!!  Your supplements are fantastic!!”  C.W.

August 2018 Newsletter: Preventing and Reversing Cognitive Decline

Tenth Anniversary Edition of the Monthly Newsletter

Welcome to the Tenth Anniversary of my Monthly Newsletter! Amazing how time flies! I want to take the opportunity to thank all those who support me daily in this work – my wife Susana, my mentors, and all my clients – past and present!

Preventing and Reversing Cognitive Decline

Last month you met Dr. Jason Fung who works with Type 2 diabetes patients to fully reverse and prevent this disease without medications or surgery. He is using a special diet to control insulin with intermittent fasting.

This month, I am introducing Dr. Dale E. Bredesen, a Professor at UCLA, Founding President of the Buck Institute, and Chief Medical Officer of MPI Cognition. In 2017 he wrote, The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline. My summary of the book is the feature article of this newsletter.

I am also encouraging you to participate in my Share the Care program. Refer a friend or loved one to Rosen Wellness and you will both receive a benefit. See below for the offer details.

Preventing and Reversing Cognitive Decline

Alzheimer’s is feared like no other disease for two reasons: there is no effective treatment and the progression of the disease can be extremely challenging for both the person and his or her loved ones. As Dr. Bredesen says, “Everyone knows someone who’s survived cancer, but no one knows anyone who’s survived Alzheimer’s – until now.”

Alzheimer’s affects an estimated one in nine Americans 65 or older, which is approximately 5.2 million people. As the population ages this number is expected to continue to increase. The number of people affected by Alzheimer’s is creating a tremendous burden on Medicare, Medicaid, and our long-term care facilities, and of course on the families who are dealing with the disease progression.

In his book, Dr. Bredesen turns the conventional wisdom upside down! He believes that rather than Alzheimer’s being caused by the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain, these plaques are the protective response of the brain from at least one of three main threats. He also states there is no single cause to Alzheimer’s and each type of threat requires different actions. It is not a question of what is “wrong” with the brain, rather it is a question of what conditions in each affected individual is causing this reaction in their brain. In many cases more than one of the three threats is present.

These three threats are: 1) Inflammation from infection, diet, and other causes; 2) The decline and shortage of supportive nutrients, hormones, and other brain-supporting substances; and 3) Toxic substances such as metals or biotoxins (poisons produced by microbes such as molds).

Share the Care

I am pleased to reintroduce the Share the Care program. It provides a wonderful incentive to share your success improving and restoring your health and quality of life with friends and relatives.

The program is designed to help people you know take the next step with their health – and to express my gratitude to you.  Here is how it works: Tell your friends and family what I do and how I have helped you.  If they are interested, provide them my contact information.

They will receive $50 off their initial consult and you will receive 10% off your next purchase.

Thank you for being a valued client.

At Home Gluten Test Kit

I recently became aware of an at home gluten test kit. It is called Gluten Detective and it is the first at-home test for the identification and monitoring of gluten consumption. Gluten is hidden in many products and sometimes we can believe we are eating gluten-free foods and yet still being exposed to gluten. This test helps to identify if that is the situation. Gluten Detective offers 25% off the purchase of your first kit. There are stool and urine kit options available. Even at full price these kits seem to be reasonably priced. For more information click here: https://glutendetective.com/.

ConsumerSafetyGuide.com

I was recently contacted by Consumer Safety Guide and asked to add a link on my Resources page. I was very impressed with the information they provide and wanted to share it with you on my Website and here: https://www.consumersafetyguide.com/

In their own words, “Consumer Safety Guide was created to keep the public informed about consumer dangers and safety issues associated with numerous products that can cause the public harm. Our website is constantly being updated with the most recent information on the most popular prescription medications and FDA-approved medical devices that could be endangering your health or putting your loved ones at risk. Our mission is to keep you informed and help you make the most educated decisions about your health care!”

The Importance of Trust

“I have gone to Bernie with different issues over the past few years. I appreciate his vast knowledge outside of traditional western medicine. With each concern I bring he is always thorough, professional and dives right in to find the best solution. I know I can trust him when it comes to my health & wellness.” K.K.

“Have a fabulous vacation-I just wanted to say that today after taking my drops and pills, I felt so zen and like in a state of being relaxed! So, whatever they are doing…I’m excited️. Thank you so much!” H.J.
