February 2018 Newsletter: Spread the Love

Spread the love this February with the gift of a healthy detox or weight loss program for you and your loved ones.

February is here and with that a desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle is a key goal for many people. Every day clients ask me how they can remove toxins and extra body fat to boost their energy levels and lose some weight, particularly the extra pounds they gained over the Holiday Season.

At my last Open House we explored the different types of programs that I offer to achieve your objectives and how to best select one that makes the most sense for your lifestyle. This information is summarized in the two articles below.

The first article explains cleanses, purifications, gut cleanses, and weight loss programs to help you decide what is appropriate for you and why these programs can be a success or a failure. The second article discusses why people do not always achieve their weight loss goals on these programs.

What’s Right for You? Detoxification, Weight Loss, or Gut Cleanse?

This is the time of year when we re-focus on our health. There are a couple of reasons for that. First, it is a New Year, so it is time to make changes – eat better, exercise more, and lose weight. Second, many of us recognize the Holiday Season took its toll. We notice a few extra pounds, an overall sensation of not feeling our best, and it seems we’re either getting sick or fighting off a cold or flu. Then the natural human desire to feel better takes hold.

We look for a solution, something to make us feel better. This is typically some type of “diet” or “weight loss program” or “cleanse.” There are many programs to choose from, but the important question is what is best for you. In determining that you need to understand the different types of programs available.

I classify programs into three main categories: purification or detoxification programs, gut purification programs, and weight loss programs.

For the rest of the article click here: What’s Right for You?

Are You Weight Loss Resistant?

Ever notice what happens at the beginning of the year?  The New Year’s resolution.  This is the year you vow to get healthier, to lose those extra pounds, and to keep them off.  The health clubs are jammed with others making the same resolution.  There are lines of people waiting to use the stepping machines and the exercise bikes.  But, within a few short weeks the crowds disappear and there are no more lines.

Why does this happen?  You’ve cut back on the alcohol, are eating salads for lunch, skipping a meal here and there, and are working out hard at the gym.  Yet the pounds are not flying off.  This is not uncommon as over 95% of all diets end in disappointment.  However, don’t be discouraged.  If you read on you’ll learn how you can get lasting results.

In determining that you need to understand the different types of programs available.

I classify programs into three main categories: purification or detoxification programs, gut purification programs, and weight loss programs.

Purification or detoxification programs aim to improve the overall functioning of your body by removing toxins from your body. These toxins come from the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe (both indoor and outdoor pollutants), personal care products, and household products. Your body has three ways to deal with toxins. It can remove them – this is the optimal method, or it can hide them in body fat or deposit them in other tissues. The last two options are less than optimal. Once the toxins are placed in fat or other tissues we begin to experience a variety of symptoms.

Typical symptoms of toxicity include: chronic fatigue, constipation, gas and bloating, poor digestion, bad breath, inability to lose weight, headaches, mood swings, brain fog, joint pain and stiffness, sensitivities to smells, frequent colds, chronic infections, skin rashes, and hives. This can lead to long-term effects on the body that impact reproduction, development, brain function, endocrine system function, and immune system function.

Purification or detoxification programs target and support the body’s main organs of detoxification – the liver and kidneys, as well as the lymph, blood, skin, colon, and lungs. The programs include nutritional supplements to support these organs and drive detoxification and a clean diet to limit toxins entering the body.

During the purification or detoxification process the first couple of days are usually the most difficult as toxins begin to be released and the body is adjusting. But as the program progresses most people feel better – they have more energy, think clearer, sleep better, and lose weight.

I generally believe this is the best and safest place to start for one very important reason – the toxins that are stored in fat.

A weight loss program is designed to help you lose weight and burn fat. These programs will also feature a healthy diet, but the supplements are more designed to burn and reduce fat. Generally, there is no support for your detoxification organs. So, what can happen is the body can begin to dump toxins and there is no support to detoxify. This can result in a variety of symptoms occurring while losing weight. I can provide a real-life story of a client’s experience on the Whole30 program. This is a wonderful way of eating, a program I certainly encourage, and will support weight loss. However, I have heard of cases of a week of headaches while doing the program. In this case there was a dump of toxins from the fat into the blood stream with no mechanism for supporting detoxification.

My recommendation is for most clients to do a detoxification program first and follow that with a weight loss program.

There are three reasons why a weight loss program may not be effective. First, there are instances when a person loses very few pounds on a program. In this case the body will not allow the fat to be burned and the subsequent release of toxins. The body is protecting itself from these dangerous toxins entering the blood stream where they can cause damage. Second, there may be a hormonal imbalance which is keeping the body in a fat storage mode. For more information on that click here: https://brwellness.com/?p=1100. Third, a bacterial imbalance in the gut.

There is significant current research suggesting the composition of one’s gut bacteria plays a major role in how much fat a person has on their body. People who are fat have a different gut bacteria composition than those who are thin. What has not been established is which comes first (the chicken or the egg?). Are there certain types of bacteria that make someone fat or once someone becomes fat do they tend to have a certain type of bacteria? Regardless, if that bacteria mix is prevalent, the person will not lose weight.

This is one of the times a gut cleanse program is needed. The gut cleanse programs target the digestive system. Gut cleanse programs will feature supplements to help digest food and to clean the intestinal tract with herbs and nutritionals that are anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. This helps to remove bad bacteria, fungus, yeast, or parasites that may be impacting your health. Gut cleanse programs also feature a healthier and cleaner diet.  Notice how this is consistent among all the programs suggesting that in all cases it is essential to eat healthier if you want to improve your health.

As you can see there are a variety of scenarios to consider in selecting the correct program for you. Therefore, I recommend a consultation to review your objectives and current health status to best decide.

You have cut back on the alcohol, are eating salads for lunch, skipping a meal here and there, and are working out hard at the gym.  Yet the pounds are not flying off.  This is not uncommon as over 95% of all diets end in disappointment.  However, don’t be discouraged.  If you read on you’ll learn how you can get lasting results.

We are told the formula is simple – less food plus more exercise equals less weight.

Truth be told, the formula is much more complex.  You may be what is termed by leading nutritionists as “weight loss resistant.”  What does this mean?  Put simply it means having difficulty or an inability to lose weight.  There are several factors that contribute to this and here’s how:

  • Chronic stress – raises cortisol which breaks down muscle, puts sugar in the blood stream, and promotes fat storage which increases the likelihood of insulin resistance; and lowers DHEA (an anti-aging, libido stimulating, and fat burning hormone).
  • Insulin resistance – blocks the burning of fat, causes fat storage around the abdomen, and causes inflammation.
  • Hormone imbalances – imbalances of estrogen and progesterone in women promote fat storing; low DHEA and testosterone in men and women reduce the ability to burn fat and build muscle; high estrogen in men promotes fat storage; and high progesterone in women promotes insulin resistance.
  • Hypothyroidism – muscle building is slowed, metabolism is slowed, sex hormones are not produced sufficiently and are out of balance, and general low energy and fatigue.
  • Brain chemical imbalance – neurotransmitter imbalances cause cravings and inappropriate eating behaviors.
  • Chronic sleep deprivation – increases cortisol, creates sugar cravings, lowers thyroid function, lowers energy, and increases appetite.
  • Low Fat Free Mass – a low muscle mass to fat mass ratio keeps metabolism slow (this is often a result from chronic dieting).
  • Food allergies – can cause cellular fluid retention or “false fat” and create cravings for these foods.
  • Gut dysbiosis and yeast overgrowth – healthy bacteria is an important part of digestion as they consume calories, otherwise an increase of fat storage.
  • Toxic burden – disrupts pH balance in gut, blood, and tissues; slows metabolic rate; disrupts absorption of minerals; disrupts hormone receptor sites creating imbalances; and lowers thyroid function (hypothyroidism).

Most programs just measure pounds lost and are successful in that realm.  However, that is only part of the picture.  Soon after the program is completed the weight begins to come back on.  The reason – the underlying behaviors and lifestyle have not changed.  With the metabolism slowed from dieting and a return to prior habits, the pounds quickly come back on.

The best program for long term health and vitality will be one that addresses your individual needs.  Working with a qualified nutrition consultant you can determine your areas of weight loss resistance and develop a plan to address them.  As these areas are brought back into balance your metabolism will improve, enabling you to lose weight in a healthy manner.  It may take some time to get the body back on track.  The body has built-in healing mechanisms and with proper nutrition and healthy behaviors the body will heal.  As the body heals you will lose fat and weight.

January 2018 Newsletter: Happy New Year, Open House and Start the Year Off With A Cleanse!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and is rearing and ready to go for a Healthy and Happy 2018!

With the start of the New Year there is no better time for a cleanse!! While picking up the exercise is important, it all starts with what you are eating and the 14 day cleanse is the best way to clean up your diet! As mentioned in last month’s newsletter I will be hosting several one-hour group meetings to learn about cleansing. See below for dates and times and special pricing.

My next Open House will be Thursday, January 25 at my office at 7:15 PM. Note the slightly later starting time as I want to give the parking lot a few more minutes to clear out from the dinner crowd at the restaurant. There will be two topics.

Topic 1: Why Cleanse?

Topic 2: Quantum Physics and You!! (Hint: How and why the EMF Phone Chips, EMF Key Chains, Food Freshness Card, and Sleep Chips work!)

Open House

Quantum Physics and You – sounds like a very strange title, so what is it all about? At the next Open House, I will be featuring and talking about the products from Nature’s Frequencies. Many of you are already using them – the EMF Phone Chips, the EMF Key Chain, the Sleep Chip, and the Food Freshness Card – to name a few.

At my last Open House, I joked that I was about to risk my career with a demonstration of the Food Freshness Card. Here is what happened. I have samples of a certain bone broth protein that I was muscle testing on many clients because I was strongly considering selling it. However, it failed every test! I asked a colleague of mine who sells it if she tested it on people and she said yes, but everything that comes into the office is put on the Food Freshness Card. So, I decided to try that first in the privacy of one client, which proved successful, so I took the big chance at the Open House and sure enough it worked again. Once the product was on the Food Freshness Card for a few minutes it passed the muscle test!

There is a lot more information on the Nature’s Frequencies website. You can see independent studies of how food stayed fresh longer using the card and read multiple testimonials. Here’s the website: http://www.naturesfrequencies.com/

December 2017 Newsletter: Happy Holidays, The Gut, The Cleanse, and a Flash Sale

Happy Holidays! I hope everyone had a very nice Thanksgiving and is now looking forward to the rest of the Holiday season – Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

Recently I had a very interesting conversation with one of my clients. She and her husband just completed the 14 Day Cleanse and were both extremely pleased with the results in terms of weight loss and overall health. She asked me, “Do you ever watch Dr. Oz?” I said I did not and somewhat facetiously commented that most of what he talks about I have known for several years. Her reply caught my attention! That may be true for me, but to most clients the information is likely new, and I should talk about it. So, that’s what I’m doing!

Apparently, the latest from Dr. Oz is that your health is all about the condition of your gut. Specifically, what is happening with your personal environment or flora (the bacteria, yeasts, etc. that live in your digestive tract). I’m excited to announce that I now have access to a new stool test called GI-MAP that tells you exactly what is going on in your gut and what to do about it. See below for more details on the test and some articles about the gut.

My next Open House will be in February at my office. The date and time will be announced in the January newsletter. Below is a brief preview of the topic – Quantum Physics and You!! (Hint: How and why the EMF Phone Chips, EMF Key Chains, Food Freshness Card, and Sleep Chips work!)

As we approach the New Year, come January some of you will say, “time for a cleanse!” I will be hosting several one-hour group meetings to learn about cleansing. See below for dates and times and special pricing.

Also, I’m having a FLASH SALE of 20% off Vital Proteins whey protein and bone broth collagen products and a few select others. See below for details. Quantities are limited so product availability will be on a first come first serve basis.

It’s All About the Gut

There is no shortage of health news articles about the importance of the gut and your personal flora. I have touched on that subject several times in the past. I have discussed identification via stool and saliva testing, blood testing, and muscle testing.

Here’s the latest – the GI-MAP™ a DNA Stool Analysis from Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. The test assesses everyone’s microbiome, identifies healthy and unhealthy microorganisms, and provides a personalized nutritional protocol. The test costs $359 prepaid and may be covered by insurance. You can pick up a test kit from me, you pay the lab directly, and you consult with me regarding the results. For more information on the test click here: http://diagnosticsolutionslab.com/

Thermal Imaging Scans Available December 28

On December 28 from 8:30 AM until 12:00 PM, Jenny Steger from The Longevity Center will again be offering thermal scans at my office. DITI (Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging or Thermography) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows the examiner to visualize and quantify changes in skin surface temperature. An infrared scanning device is used to convert infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface into electrical impulses that are visualized in color on a monitor. This visual image graphically maps the body temperature and is referred to as a thermogram.

November 2017 Newsletter: Immune System Boosting Ideas as You Prepare for the Cold and Flu Season

Winter is just around the corner and with it the approaching cold and flu season. This newsletter and my next Open House on November 16 will focus on this topic. First, I will be covering a basic overview of the immune system. Second, I will be offering natural solutions for preventing and reversing auto-immune conditions. Third, I will be providing a list the go-to supplements for when you start to feel something coming on.

The next Open House “All About Immunity” will be November 16 at 7:00 PM. Please note that the Open House will be at my office; 10040 N. Port Washington Road in Mequon. There will be two main topics. First, we will look at the everyday functioning of the immune system and how our immune system handles acute events. Second, we will look at stealth pathogens. Sounds scary, perfect for Halloween! But this topic is very serious. Stealth pathogens include bacteria, viruses, fungus, yeasts, mold, parasites, and mycoplasmas that cause chronic infections and years of unexplained symptoms. A clue to when a stealth pathogen is involved is when the client says, “I’ve never been well since…” One of my colleagues, Kerry Bone captures the essence of it by calling it “NBWS.”

The Immune System: Basic Overview
The immune system is frequently used to describe one of the major systems of the body. There are different ways to look at its actual components. In some circles, the entire body is considered the immune system because everything influences immunity. In the wholistic approach, the whole body – the skin, digestion, hormones, circulation, etc. all play a role in keeping us healthy.

Natural Solutions for Preventing and Reversing Auto Immune Conditions
Did you know the current list of autoimmune diseases is now over 150 and continues to grow? We can now say that there is an autoimmune epidemic underway in the United States. We all know at least one person who suffers from an autoimmune condition. In most cases they are offered little help from traditional medicine. The best case is to “manage” it to keep the symptoms as reduced as possible. There is never any mention of a possible reversal of the condition. Fortunately, many natural/holistic practitioners across the country are having success in preventing and reversing autoimmune conditions every day. I recently completed a six-week training called the Autoimmune Mastery Program with Dr. Michael Gaeta, one of the country’s leading natural health authorities. This course focused on this very topic – the prevention and reversal of autoimmune conditions.

The Cold and Flu Season Awaits
Winter is just around the corner. With the colder weather comes the cold and flu season. As I have mentioned previously I recommend that all clients have on hand Congaplex Chewable and Andrographis Complex by Standard Process – a great way to boost your immune system when you feel something coming on. Take 1-2 Congaplex every hour and 1 Andrographis Complex every 4 hours while awake and usually in a day or two you will be feeling yourself again.

Please let me know if you need to stock up! Or better yet, get them for a special price at the Open House!

Top Quality Kosher Protein Bars

I am excited to announce that I have finally found a source for Kosher and top quality protein bars. Ironically, it was right under my nose for the past few years. For some reason I failed to realize that all the protein bars made by Designs for Health are Kosher, carrying the OU mark. These bars come in these great tasting flavors: Cherry, Chocolate Mint, Coconut, Coconut Almond, Double Dark Chocolate (Susana’s favorite), Mixed Berry, Vanilla Almond, Mocha (my favorite), Peanut Butter (Mollie’s favorite), Chocolate Almond, and Chocolate. You can order them through me or purchase direct from the following link: https://brwellness.ehealthpro.com/

The Immune System: Basic Overview

The immune system. This term is frequently used to describe one of the major systems of the body. There are different ways to look at its actual components. In some circles the entire body is considered the immune system because everything influences immunity. In the wholistic approach, the whole body – the skin, digestion, hormones, circulation, etc. all play a role in keeping us healthy.

The immune system has two roles: to kill and to remember. Pathogens release certain chemicals and proteins that our immune system recognizes as not part of us which triggers a kill response. Once this occurs the system “remembers” and we can reduce the impact of future attacks of a similar pathogen and thus have “immunity.”

This parallels the two main parts to the immune system. The primary or innate immune system and the secondary or acquired immune system. The innate immune system is for immediate response to pathogens. The acquired immune system develops after. It creates highly specific antibodies for foreign (“not self”) or body (“self”) proteins (antigens).

The lymphatic system plays a major role in the immune response. The primary organs of the lymphatic system are the thymus gland and the bone marrow. The secondary organs are the lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, liver, Peyer’s patches in the small intestines, and appendix.

The thymus gland is located beneath the breastbone and is the place where T cells mature. T-cells are a form of white blood cells that recognize and attach to foreign molecules (antigens). White blood cells are made in the bone marrow. Bone marrow also produces red blood cells and platelets. White blood cells include lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.

There are two types of lymphocytes – the previously mentioned T cells and B cells. B-cells make antibodies. These are chemicals that latch onto foreign substances inactivating them or marking them to be destroyed by other immune cells. Natural killer (NK) cells are a type of T-cell – the first line of defense for the body versus an infection. Lymphocytes migrate to areas of inflammation throughout the inflammatory process. Remember that infection produces inflammation.

Phagocytes are immune cells that engulf and digest foreign particles. They follow the lymphocytes into battle. The lymphocytes have marked the invaders for destruction. The phagocytes complete that task. The most important phagocytes are neutrophils and monocytes. Neutrophils are the first to respond to an infection. They will be elevated at the onset of an infection and decrease as the body fights the infection. They are the primary defense against microbial infections and respond to inflammation.

Monocytes are the body’s second line of defense against infection. They will remove dead cells, microorganisms, and other waste materials from circulating blood. Monocytes tend to be elevated towards the end of the infection. They will stay elevated due to high levels of inflammation, during an extended recovery from an infection, and in cases of extended infection such as parasitic infections.

Eosinophils help to remove and breakdown the by-products of protein catabolism. They can ingest antibody-antigen complexes and are active in the later stages of inflammation. They are not effective against bacteria, but do respond to allergic and parasitic issues. Eosinophils will remain elevated in cases of intestinal parasites or food or environmental sensitivities. They are phagocytes that contain histamine, heparin, and serotonin.

Basophils also contain histamine, heparin, and serotonin. They play an important role in the inflammatory process by releasing heparin and other substances to prevent clotting in the inflamed tissues. They will often be elevated in cases of continued inflammation and allergies.

On a side note: Most blood tests will include what is known as the WBC (white blood cell count) and differential. The differential is the composition by type of white blood cell and adds up to 100%. Many times a client will be told that their blood test results are “normal.” However, in truth, their lab results are far from optimal. When taking a closer look at a client’s WBC and differential I often find the patterns of either acute or chronic infection or inflammation which supports the findings of my nutrition response testing.

Lymph is a fluid that contains lymphocytes, proteins and some fatty molecules formed from the fluid around the body cells. Its function is to filter this material and return it to the blood stream. The lymph removes waste materials from cells, so they can be disposed of properly by the body. The material moves through lymphatic capillaries and lymphatic vessels on its way back to the circulatory system. The lymph nodes are where the lymph is filtered and purified.

The spleen filters the blood and lymph. It removes old red blood cells and destroys bacteria. The tonsils protect us against bacteria that enters via the nose and mouth. The liver produces half of the lymph in the body and stores and detoxifies blood. The Peyer’s patches monitor intestinal bacteria populations and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The appendix makes antibodies.

Following is a basic example of how the immune system works to defend the body against a virus with a four-step process.

1. The invading virus is detected by white blood cells called macrophages. These cells are also known as the “frontline defender”. As they encounter a foreign organism such as a virus, they begin to destroy the antigens or toxins produced by the virus. These activities are noticed by helper T-cells. They have identified that the macrophages need more help, so they signal the spleen and lymph nodes to produce additional cells to help fight the infection.

2. The full involvement of the immune system. The spleen and lymph nodes are producing Killer T-cells and B-cells. Killer T-cells begin to multiply and arrive to fight the invading virus. At the same time B-cells produce antibodies which are effective at targeted a specific invader.

3. Fighting off the virus. By this time the virus is also doing its own fight for survival. It has entered some of the body cells and is replicating and multiplying on its own. The Killer T-cells are killing the infected cells and the antibodies are working to prevent further growth of the virus.

4. The virus has been contained and the thymus sends out suppressor T-cells to slow down the immune response. At the same time Memory cells are recording specific information about the virus, so that should it appear again, the body will be able to fight it more efficiently and effectively.

The above are the basic mechanics of the immune system. We tend to think of our immune system as fending off invading foreign substances that create an infection – such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungus. However, it is important to understand that other factors have great influence on our immune response. The wholistic approach. These factors include: food and nutrition, the environment, and stress.

The food we eat is critical. Foods that we are allergic to or that we have sensitivities to will produce an inflammatory response. This turns on the immune system, utilizing resources that may otherwise have been required to fight a pathogen. Sugar is known to depress the immune system for up to five hours after being consumed. And, general nutritional deficiencies make it easier for pathogens to invade our body and reduce the effectiveness of the immune system. Our susceptibility to secondary infection is greater and recovery will be slower after infection or illness.

Environmental toxins are known to compromise the immune system, particularly exposure to heavy metals such as: Mercury (found in dental amalgams, fish); Lead (found in drinking water, paint, pollution, and pipes); Cadmium (from cigarette smoke, shellfish, and industrial waste); Aluminum (in antacids, antiperspirants, pots, foil, and water); and Arsenic (found in rice, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and glues). Again, dealing with environmental toxins distracts the immune system from pathogens. It is quite common to see heavy metal toxicity accompanying pathogen activity.

Signs of a toxic body include: fatigue, lethargy, depression, headaches, allergies, muscle aches, chronic infections, frequent colds, sluggishness, nervousness, irritability, sensitivity to perfume and other odors, and joint pains.

Once the body begins to show signs of toxicity, the immune system is over-burdened and autoimmune disorders begin to occur. Did you know the current list of autoimmune diseases is now over 150 and continues to grow? We can truly say there is an autoimmune epidemic underway in the United States. October 2017 Newsletter: Stealth Pathogens, Breast Cancer Awareness, Bone Broth and Collagen

Stealth Pathogens! Sounds scary, like something out of a horror movie. Well, it is and is something that I definitely see with my clients. One of my colleagues Kerry Bone captures the essence of it by calling it “NBWS.” A clue to when a stealth pathogen is involved is when the client says, “I’ve never been well since…” This will be the topic of my next Open House – November 16 at 7:00 – and we’ll be back at my office at 10040 N. Port Washington Road in Mequon.

The new nutrition buzz words are bone broth and collagen. What is this all about? See below.

The Jewish Holidays continue during the month of October and as such the office will be closed and I will be unavailable from late afternoon Wednesday October 4 through Saturday October 7 and again the following week from late afternoon Wednesday October 11 through the morning of Monday October 16. So, please plan accordingly if you need supplements!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is breast cancer awareness month. Awareness includes both prevention and detection. It seems mainstream medicine focuses on detection and use of mammograms. And, as it seems with all health related issues there are multiple perspectives. Are mammograms safe? Are they effective? How often should they be done? Is thermography a viable alternative?

On October 10, Jenny Steger from The Longevity Center will be offering thermal scans at my office.

As mentioned above there is some controversy regarding the safety and effectiveness of mammograms. From GreenMed Info here’s http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/hidden-dangers-mammograms-every-woman-should-know-about

New Products Collagen Bone Broth
The new buzz words in nutrition are bone broth and collagen. Of course, to those of you familiar with the Weston Price Foundation this is nothing new to you! But for the rest of the world it is big news and naturally along with that comes the mass marketing and mass production of products! And with this comes the marketing hype. And with this is some truth and of course some deception.

To help my clients get the best products on the market I did some extensive research and I am now a distributor for Vital Proteins. For more information on Vital Proteins click here: https://www.vitalproteins.com.

Vital Proteins has a line of products that includes powders of beef collagen, fish collagen, beef bone broth, chicken bone broth, and whey protein with collagen. What’s unique about Vital Proteins is that the base ingredients are organic chickens, grass-fed and pastured beef, and wild fish. This is not the case with most of the competition and particularly some of the leading brands.

For an overview of what these products are read my article about bone broth and collagen by clicking here: https://brwellness.com/nutrition-news/?p=774

Or, if you like, give me a call and I’ll explain it to you.

Another Parasite Case Resolved!
Hi Bernie, I wanted to share with you that I had Hydro therapy today and no visible worms! This is great news the [remedies] are working! I hope I test the same with you when I see you! Had to share, you’re one of few I can tell! Hope you have a great evening!

Bone Broth and Collagen – The “Hottest Trend” in Health

It seems all you hear about on all the leading health sites these days is bone broth and collagen. Celebrities and athletes are endorsing it and bone broth cafes are becoming part of coffee shops in major cities. Dr. Oz, Dr. Axe, Dr. Mercola are all on the bandwagon. Of course, those of us who are members of the Weston Price Foundation have known about all the benefits of bone broth for years!

Let’s start with bone broth. Quite simply it is made from simmering bones for 12-24 hours. Predominantly beef, chicken, and fish are used. Bone broth is rich in nutrients which are typically not a major part of modern diets including key minerals, collagen, gelatin, glucosamine and chondroitin. Thus, it supports a wide range of the body systems including the digestive system; the immune system; joints and muscles; skin, hair, and nails; and our overall metabolism.

Among these nutrients are the glycosaminoglycans (aka GAGs) which include glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and chondroitin sulfate. Glucosamine supports the integrity of our cartilage providing joint health, flexibility, and comfort. Hyaluronic acid is found in our connective, skin, and neural tissues. This supports healthy aging, cell rejuvenation, and skin firmness. Chondroitin is found in cartilage. It supports joint health and comfort and is needed for a healthy inflammation response. The key minerals found in bone broth include calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. These support a variety of functions including circulation, bone density, nerve signaling, heart health, and digestive health.

And then there’s collagen! Collagen is the main structural protein found in our bodies. It forms connective tissue, protects our mucosal lining and acts as a sealant to the gastrointestinal tract. There are 19 amino acids in collagen. It is important to understand that for full digestion of collagen the stomach must be able to reach proper acidity! This is critical to understand! If you are taking acid reflux medications or other acid reducing over the counter products your stomach is not reaching the proper pH to digest proteins and specifically collagen!

The four main amino acids in collagen are: proline, glutamine, glycine, and arginine. Proline supports the integrity of the skin, hair, nails, and gut lining. It is used for tissue repair in the joints and arteries.

Glutamine maintains muscle tissue and supports the gastrointestinal tract lining. It is essential for gut repair. It also plays a role in the methylation process in supporting the synthesis of glutathione.

Glycine is one third of the protein found in collagen. It helps form muscle tissue and is found in the muscles, skin, and other tissue. One of its key roles is to convert glucose into usable energy. It also promotes detoxification and cleansing.

Arginine breaks down nitric oxide which is important for cardiovascular and arterial health. It improves vasodilation – the widening of arteries and the relaxation of muscle cells and blood vessels for better circulation. It helps to repair muscles, heal wounds, and supports proper growth and development.

There are at least 16 types of collagen in the human body. 80-90% of it is Types 1, 2, and 3. Type 1 is the most abundant and strongest in our bodies. It is found in tendons, ligaments, bones, skin, and various organs. It is used to form bones and support wound healing. The best source of Type 1 collagen is beef.

Type 2 collagen is the cartilage within our joints. It is the main collagen of our connective tissues. It supports gut healing and the immune system as well. The best sources of Type 2 collagen are chicken and turkey.

Type 3 collagen is in the extracellular matrix that comprises organs and skin. It provides the elasticity and firmness to the skin, and forms blood vessels and tissue within the heart. The best source of Type 3 collagen is beef.

While collagen is one of the ingredients in bone broth, we are also seeing many companies market collagen separate from bone broth. These are often called collagen peptides. These come from the hide of the cow, the scales of the fish, or the skin and beaks of chicken and turkey.

We are seeing bone broth available in liquid form and powder (dehydrated form) as well. Collagen peptides are only in a powder form. All the powders can be added to a variety of liquids to consume. We are also seeing some companies combine protein powder (generally whey) with collagen or a bone broth protein powder combined with collagen.

It is becoming quite confusing with the vast array of products available in the market. My main piece of advice would be to make sure the products you are consuming come from organic, pastured and grass-fed animals or wild raised fish. Like the meat of the animals, if the animals are not clean neither will their bones or skin and you will be consuming the traces of antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, and fungicides that are toxic to your body.

I am recommending my clients use a mixture of chicken, beef, and fish collagen so they can obtain a nice variety of collagen.

September 2017 Newsletter: Getting Rid of Unwanted Guests, Detoxification, and September Open House

As we begin the transition from Summer to Fall so follows this month’s newsletter. First is the follow up to last month’s article, What Not to Bring Home from Your Summer Vacation entitled Getting Rid of Unwanted Guests. This article takes a closer look at what may be causing your digestive upset and what to do about it.

The change of seasons is also a great time to change our own internal seasons with a detoxification or purification program featured in the second article.

Detoxification will be further explored at my Open House on September 14 at 7 PM – To Detox or Not, That is the Question.

Due to the overwhelming enthusiasm for the last three events, we have decided to hold this Open House “off campus.” We will be meeting at the American Legion Post 457, 6050 W. Mequon Road, Mequon (across from Piggly Wiggly). As always, we will feature wonderful and healthy food, including soup, salads, and gluten-free desserts. There are separate emails with more information and special offers including discounts on detoxification programs, bone broth protein powders, and RXBARs.

Getting Rid of Unwanted Guests

Last month, we learned why sometimes our digestion does not seem quite right and how we are exposed to and host all sorts of unwanted “guests” within our own bodies. Lots of times when the doctor cannot determine what is wrong with you or they tell you it is in your head, it may likely be these unwanted “guests” – parasites, yeast/fungi/mold, viruses, or bacteria that are taking over your body and creating a variety of symptoms.

This is all fine and good, but several questions remain. First, how do I know if a “guest” is the underlying cause of the symptoms? Second, what type of “guest” is it? And third, how do I get rid of it? All these are critical questions.

It is important to be aware of other causes of digestive distress which fall into three categories: food allergies/sensitivities, structural issues in the digestive tract, and ongoing emotional stress.

To Detox or Not, That is the Question

The other day I came across an alarming study. It showed that 287 toxins were found in the blood of newborn babies. One of them was a breakdown product of DDT, the pesticide that has been banned for over 40 years! Toxins enter our environment from a variety of sources and unfortunately, they can remain there for decades. These toxins enter our body via the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and through our skin.

The basic problem we all face is that the world we were designed to live in has changed dramatically. Unfortunately, our bodies have not adapted fast enough to flush out the numerous man-made chemicals, toxins, and pollutants that are present in our daily lives.

Curious about your personal level of toxicity? Click here: https://brwellness.com/docs/toxicity_questionnaire.pdf

Getting rid of these toxins will help you live a longer, healthier life. This detoxification can boost your immune system, clear your mind, balance your hormones, reduce your body fat, and much more.

All detoxification programs are not created equal. You want to be sure to select one that supports the body’s natural two phase detoxification process. This is accomplished providing the nutrients needed to support and balance Phase I and Phase II metabolic pathways.

Come to our Open House on September 14 and learn all about it!

I will be featuring the VegeCleanse-Plus 14 Day Detoxification Program, the Standard Process 21 Day Purification Program, a Gut Detoxification program, and a gallbladder cleanse.
